Drug UsesIsotretinoin (generic Accutane) is a powerful systemic drug that is used to treat severe acne that is resistant to more conservative drugs such as drying agents, creams, and topical or oral antibiotics. Isotretinoin has become one of the most effective treatments available for most patients with severe or cystic acne. The most common treatment process of isotretinoin consists of 16 to 20 weeks followed by a period of rest. For the majority of patients, one course of therapy is all that is needed. Because of its serious side effects, isotretinoin should be used only for severe resistant acne.
DosingThe recommended dose of isotretinoin is 0.5 to 2 mg per kg of body weight daily. Isotretinoin drug should be taken with food in order to improve its absorption.
